Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan is a Japanese anime television series by Wit Studio that premiered on MBS in April 2013. It adapts Hajime Isayama's manga about the last humans, who live behind walls to escape man-eating giants. Wit Studio made the first three seasons, the first one directed by Tetsurō Araki, before MAPPA took over in 2020.

Publication of the comic ran from September 2009 until April 2021 within Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine, totaling 34 collected volumes. The animated series aired its first 25 episodes between April and September 2013 on Mainichi Broadcasting System. A 12-episode second season arrived in April 2017, followed by a two-part third season of 22 episodes that ran across NHK General TV between July 2018 and July 2019. MAPPA then produced the fourth season, which added 28 television episodes across two broadcast blocks before concluding with two extended television specials in March and November 2023.

Three concentric stone walls named Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina rise 50 m (164 ft) to shield the population from giant predators. That defense collapses in the year 845 when a 60 m (197 ft) Colossal Titan and an Armored Titan breach the gate at Shiganshina. The trauma of losing his mother to a Titan drives Eren Yeager into military service alongside his companions Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert. Joining the Scout Regiment, the new recruits use gas-pressurized wire harnesses to scale urban structures and sever the nape of a Titan's neck.

Musician Hiroyuki Sawano scored the soundtrack across the opening three seasons before Kohta Yamamoto contributed additional compositions for the final broadcast. Funimation launched North American home video sales in 2014, while Manga Entertainment handled retail releases across the United Kingdom. The series earned the Television Animation of the Year trophy at the 2014 Tokyo Anime Award Festival. In January 2024, the series received the Astra TV Award for Best Streaming Animated Series or TV Movie. In 2025 it became the first winner of the Global Impact Award at the 9th Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
