Code Geass
Code Geass is an anime television series produced by Sunrise that began broadcasting on MBS in October 2006. The series is an original story created by director Gorō Taniguchi and writer Ichirō Ōkouchi. Character designer Takahiro Kimura adapted original concept art from manga collective Clamp, while composers Kotaro Nakagawa and Hitomi Kuroishi wrote the musical score.
In an alternate history, the Holy Britannian Empire invades Japan with armored humanoid fighting vehicles known as Knightmare Frames. Britannia strips the nation of its sovereignty, renames the territory Area 11, and designates the native residents as Elevens. Exiled Britannian prince Lelouch Lamperouge lives quietly in Tokyo under an assumed surname alongside his blind and paraplegic sister Nunnally. During a military assault in the Shinjuku ghetto, Lelouch encounters a green-haired immortal woman named C.C., who grants him the supernatural Geass power to command absolute obedience from anyone.
The anime spans two seasons comprising 50 episodes in total. The first season of 25 episodes ran from October 2006 to July 2007, and the second season, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, aired 25 episodes between April and September 2008. Sunrise released a theatrical compilation film trilogy in Japanese cinemas between October 2017 and May 2018, followed by the sequel film Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection in February 2019. Bandai Entertainment licensed the series for North America, where Cartoon Network began televising the English dub in April 2008.
Japanese voice actor Jun Fukuyama played Lelouch Lamperouge, and Takahiro Sakurai voiced his childhood companion Suzaku Kururugi. Fukuyama earned the Best Actor in a Leading Role honor at the 1st Seiyu Awards in 2007. The series won the Television Animation Award at the 12th Animation Kobe in October 2007. At the Tokyo International Anime Fair in March 2008, the anime received the Television Category Award. Kadokawa Shoten published several manga adaptations in Japan starting in 2006, including an alternate retelling drawn by Majiko.
