One Piece

One Piece is an anime television series made by Toei Animation that began broadcasting on Fuji Television in October 1999.

Eiichiro Oda created the manga source material, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997. Konosuke Uda directed the initial run of episodes, with Kohei Tanaka providing orchestral music compositions.

Monkey D. Luffy eats a supernatural Devil Fruit as a boy, turning his flesh into rubber but losing his ability to swim. Inspired by a visiting pirate captain, he leaves his home island in a tiny dinghy to pursue the hidden wealth left behind by the executed Pirate King Gold Roger. Luffy aims to collect the treasure, known as the One Piece, and earn the title of Pirate King for himself. He frees swordsman Roronoa Zoro from marine custody, recruits him as his first crewmate, and sets out to navigate toward the Grand Line sea route.

Voice actress Mayumi Tanaka plays the lead role of Luffy, while Kazuya Nakai voices Zoro in the original Japanese cast. By 2024, the broadcast spanned 21 story arcs and surpassed 1100 televised episodes. Toei Animation produced 15 animated films for theatrical release between 2000 and 2022. Early movies include Clockwork Island Adventure in 2001 and Dead End Adventure in 2003. Later theatrical installments include Strong World in 2009, Film: Z in 2012, Film: Gold in 2016, Stampede in 2019, and Film: Red in 2022.

North American television audiences received the first English-dubbed broadcast of the series in 2004. At the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the anime earned the prize for Best Continuing Series in 2023 and received the same recognition in 2024. The Tokyo Anime Award honored the anime in 2002, where composer Kohei Tanaka earned the Best Music award for the film Clockwork Island Adventure. Fuji Television celebrated the broadcast of the 1000th episode in November 2021 with an updated opening sequence. The series reached its 25th year on Japanese airwaves in October 2024.
