Bocchi the Rock!

Bocchi the Rock! is an anime television series produced by CloverWorks that began broadcasting on Tokyo MX in October 2022. The anime adapts the four-panel comic strip manga written and illustrated by Aki Hamaji. Director Keiichirō Saitō directed the series with character designer Kerorira and music composer Tomoki Kikuya.

Hitori Gotō is an introverted high school student who spent three years practicing guitar in her bedroom closet to overcome chronic social anxiety. Although she develops remarkable musical skill and posts anonymous song covers online under the screen name guitarhero, she fails to make any school friends. Her situation changes when extroverted student Nijika Ijichi approaches her in a neighborhood playground seeking an emergency substitute guitarist for Kessoku Band. Hitori joins the band at the underground live music venue Starry, performing with aloof bassist Ryō Yamada and sociable vocalist Ikuyo Kita.

The first season consists of 12 episodes, which ran on Tokyo MX and BS11 from October 9 to December 25, 2022. CloverWorks split the narrative into a two-part compilation film, releasing Bocchi the Rock! Re: in Japanese theaters on June 7, 2024, and Bocchi the Rock! Re:Re: on August 9, 2024. In February 2025, the anime studio announced that a second season entered development with director Yūsuke Yamamoto. Crunchyroll streamed the series internationally across North America, Europe, and Oceania, while Plus Media Networks Asia distributed episodes on television channel Aniplus Asia in Southeast Asia.

Japanese voice actor Yoshino Aoyama voiced protagonist Hitori Gotō, and Sayumi Suzushiro voiced drummer Nijika Ijichi. At the 13th Newtype Anime Awards in 2023, the series won Best Work in the television anime category, while Keiichirō Saitō received the Best Director award. The anime won Anime of the Year at the 9th Anime Trending Awards in 2023. At the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in March 2024, the anime earned the Best Slice of Life trophy.
