Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an anime web series animated by Trigger that premiered worldwide in September 2022 on Netflix. Hiroyuki Imaishi directed the series based on the video game Cyberpunk 2077 developed by CD Projekt Red. Character designer Yoh Yoshinari and composer Akira Yamaoka developed the visual styling and musical score.

In the California metropolis of Night City, impoverished teenager David Martinez attends the elite Arasaka Academy using money scraped together by his mother Gloria. A drive-by shooting on the expressway leaves Gloria critically injured, and she dies after receiving substandard medical care. Deep in debt, David discovers an experimental military-grade spinal implant called the Sandevistan hidden in his mother's apartment. He visits an underground ripperdoc to surgically graft the device into his spine, using its superhuman acceleration to fight back against affluent classmates. KENN voiced David Martinez, while Aoi Yūki voiced netrunner Lucy.

Trigger produced the series as a single standalone season comprising 10 episodes, all released simultaneously on September 13, 2022. Writers Yoshiki Usa and Masahiko Otsuka adapted the scenario conceived by CD Projekt Red creators Rafał Jaki and Bartosz Sztybor. Showrunner Rafał Jaki initiated the collaboration between the Polish game developer and the Japanese animation studio in 2018. Game creator Mike Pondsmith, who designed the tabletop role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020 in 1988, served as an advisor on the setting and lore throughout the four-year production schedule.

Netflix streamed the series globally across more than 190 countries with voice dubbing in 12 languages and subtitles in 32 languages. At the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2023, the series won Anime of the Year and Best Score. The anime also received a nomination for Best Adaptation at The Game Awards in December 2022. Following the release of the anime in September 2022, concurrent player counts for the game Cyberpunk 2077 on the Steam platform surpassed 136,000 players. In France, the series won the Daruma for Best Anime of the Year at the 2023 Japan Expo Awards.
