Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail is an anime television series animated by A-1 Pictures and Satelight that premiered in October 2009 on TV Tokyo. Shinji Ishihira directed the adaptation based on the fantasy manga created by Hiro Mashima. Composer Yasuharu Takanashi scored the music, while Aoi Yamamoto designed the characters for the opening 175 episodes.

Seventeen-year-old celestial wizard Lucy Heartfilia travels across the Kingdom of Fiore aiming to join the prominent Fairy Tail guild. In the port town of Hargeon, she encounters Natsu Dragneel, a fire dragon slayer seeking his vanished dragon foster parent Igneel. A criminal masquerading as a Fairy Tail member lures Lucy onto a boat before Natsu intervenes and defeats the kidnapper with dragon magic. Natsu reveals his guild mark and invites Lucy to the guild hall in Magnolia to become a full member. Tetsuya Kakihara voiced Natsu Dragneel, while Aya Hirano voiced Lucy Heartfilia.

Television Tokyo broadcast the first run of 175 episodes between October 2009 and March 2013. A second run of 102 episodes co-produced with studio Bridge aired from April 2014 to March 2016, followed by a final run of 51 episodes that concluded in September 2019, bringing the total to 328 episodes. Two theatrical films debuted in Japanese cinemas: Phoenix Priestess in August 2012 and Dragon Cry in May 2017, the latter earning over 150 million yen ($1.3 million) domestically. A sequel television series, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, premiered in July 2024 from studio J.C.Staff.

Funimation acquired the North American distribution rights in 2011, releasing physical home video sets and streaming episodes across the United States. Manga Entertainment secured the distribution rights for the United Kingdom in 2012, releasing season collections on home media. In France, the television series won the Best Japanese Anime award at the 19th Anime Grand Prix hosted by AnimeLand magazine in 2012. Animax Asia broadcast the series across Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent beginning in September 2010. Madman Entertainment released the complete animated series on home video in Australia and New Zealand starting in 2011.
