Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an anime television series animated by Bones that began airing in April 2009 on MBS and TBS. Director Yasuhiro Irie led the series based on the dark fantasy manga written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa. Composer Akira Senju wrote the orchestral score, and Hiroki Kanno designed the animated characters.

In the country of Amestris, young brothers Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric attempt forbidden human transmutation to revive their deceased mother. The alchemical failure destroys Alphonse's physical body and claims Edward's left leg. Edward sacrifices his right arm to tether his brother's soul to an antique suit of armor, later replacing his missing limbs with metal automail prosthetics. Edward earns certification as a State Alchemist under Colonel Roy Mustang, granting the brothers military funding to search for the mythical Philosopher's Stone to restore their bodies.

Romi Park voices Edward Elric, and Rie Kugimiya voices Alphonse Elric. The anime aired as a continuous run of 64 episodes between April 2009 and July 2010. Scriptwriter Hiroshi Ōnogi supervised the series composition across all five story cours. Bones also produced four original video animation episodes between August 2009 and August 2010, bundled with Japanese home video releases. The franchise expanded to cinemas when director Kazuya Murata helmed the spin-off anime film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos, which Shochiku distributed to Japanese theaters on July 2, 2011.

Funimation streamed subtitled episodes in North America starting in April 2009 and launched an English broadcast on Adult Swim in February 2010. Manga Entertainment released home video sets in the United Kingdom during 2010, while Madman Entertainment handled distribution across Australia and New Zealand. The Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs named the series a Jury Recommended Work in the Animation Division at the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2010. Animage readers ranked the anime second overall in the 32nd annual Anime Grand Prix in 2010.
