Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is an anime television series animated by Production I.G that began airing in October 2002 on SKY PerfecTV!. Director Kenji Kamiyama wrote and directed the cyberpunk series based on the manga created by Masamune Shirow. Yoko Kanno composed the musical soundtrack, and Hajime Shimomura designed the characters.
In the year 2030 in Niihama, cybernetic engineering allows citizens to replace biological limbs with mechanical prosthetics and interface biological brains directly with data networks. Public Security Section 9, an elite covert-operations squad led by Chief Daisuke Aramaki and cyborg commander Major Motoko Kusanagi, investigates high-level political corruption and cyber-terrorism. The tactical unit handles hostage crises and intercepts cybernetic assassins while probing crimes linked to an elusive computer hacker known as the Laughing Man. Operatives deploy alongside spider-shaped sentient walking tanks called Tachikomas to track digital intrusions across physical and virtual environments.
Atsuko Tanaka voices Major Motoko Kusanagi, and Akio Ōtsuka voices her field partner Batou. Production I.G animated 26 episodes for the debut season between October 2002 and March 2003. A second 26-episode season titled Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG followed between January 2004 and January 2005. Kamiyama returned to direct the 2006 television film Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society, which aired on Sky PerfecTV! in September 2006. Production I.G and Sola Digital Arts later animated the 24-episode computer-animated sequel series Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 for Netflix between 2020 and 2022.
Bandai Entertainment licensed the series in North America, premiering an English dub on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in November 2004. Manga Entertainment distributed home video editions in the United Kingdom, while Madman Entertainment released the discs in Australia. The series won the Television Award at the eighth Animation Kobe in October 2003. At the sixth Japan Media Arts Festival in 2002, the Agency for Cultural Affairs presented the anime with an Excellence Award in the Animation Division.
