Clannad
Clannad is an anime television series produced by Kyoto Animation that began broadcasting on TBS in October 2007. The anime adapts the romance visual novel developed by software studio Key and writer Jun Maeda. Director Tatsuya Ishihara directed the series with character designer Kazumi Ikeda and music composer Shinji Orito.
Tomoya Okazaki is a cynical third-year student at Hikarizaka High School who lives with his emotionally distant father. A dislocated shoulder caused by a physical dispute with his father ended Tomoya's ability to play competitive sports and alienated him from academics. Walking up the hillside slope toward school, Tomoya meets Nagisa Furukawa, a timid student repeating her final year after an illness. Nagisa confides her ambition to re-establish the defunct school drama club, prompting Tomoya to assist her alongside an assortment of eccentric female classmates.
The initial television series comprises 24 episodes broadcast between October 2007 and March 2008. Kyoto Animation followed the series with a sequel season, Clannad After Story, which aired 25 episodes between October 2008 and March 2009. An unrelated animated film adaptation by studio Toei Animation premiered in Japanese movie theaters in September 2007. Distributor ADV Films initially licensed the anime for North American distribution in 2008, followed by Sentai Filmworks and Section23 Films releasing localized home video editions with an English dub.
Japanese voice actor Yuichi Nakamura voiced Tomoya Okazaki, and Mai Nakahara portrayed Nagisa Furukawa. Japanese video game company Visual Arts published the original visual novel in April 2004 for personal computers, followed by a PlayStation 2 conversion in 2006. The anime spurred several manga serializations, including an eight-volume manga drawn by Juri Misaki for Comic Rush between 2005 and 2009.
