Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden is an anime television series from Kyoto Animation that began broadcasting on Tokyo MX in January 2018.

The 13-episode series originated as a light novel written by Kana Akatsuki, which won the grand prize at the fifth Kyoto Animation Award in 2014.

Taichi Ishidate directed the anime, with character designs drawn by Akiko Takase and music composed by Evan Call. Yui Ishikawa voiced the central figure Violet, while Takehito Koyasu provided the voice of company head Claudia Hodgins. Following the broadcast run of the single season, an extra episode arrived in July 2018 as an original video animation. Two films continued the story in Japanese cinemas. The spin-off film Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll opened in September 2019. The theatrical sequel film, named Violet Evergarden: The Movie, opened in September 2020.

Events center on Violet, an orphaned soldier who fought as a weapon in a four-year continental war across Telesis. Severe combat injuries cost Violet both arms during the fighting, leading to the attachment of metallic prosthetic limbs in a military hospital. Former army officer Claudia Hodgins brings her to the coastal city of Leiden to work at the CH Postal Company. Employed as an Auto Memory Doll to write letters for customers, Violet strives to understand human feelings and discover the meaning behind words of affection spoken by Major Gilbert Bougainvillea.

Advance screenings of the first episode occurred in July 2017 at Anime Expo in Los Angeles and Japan Expo in Paris. An additional European screening took place at the AnimagiC convention in Mannheim in August 2017, followed by an Asian premiere at C3 AFA in Singapore in November 2017. The English version streamed worldwide on Netflix in 2018. At the 2019 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the anime won the award for Best Animation from six nominations. The ceremony also presented the series with nominations for Anime of the Year and Best Protagonist.
