A Silent Voice

A Silent Voice is a Japanese animated psychological teen drama film that premiered in Japanese cinemas in September 2016. The feature film adapts the manga series created by Yoshitoki Ōima.

Yoshitoki Ōima published the manga in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from August 2013 to November 2014, compiling the chapters into seven tankōbon volumes. Kyoto Animation produced the film adaptation with Shochiku serving as the distributor. Naoko Yamada directed the 130-minute film from a screenplay written by Reiko Yoshida. Futoshi Nishiya provided the character designs, while Kensuke Ushio composed the musical score. Shochiku released the film in Japanese theaters on September 17, 2016, where it earned ¥283 million during its opening two-day weekend.

Shoya Ishida is a high school student who lives in isolation after tormenting a deaf transfer student named Shoko Nishimiya during their elementary school years. When Shoko's mother reported the bullying and transferred her to another school, Shoya's classmates turned against him and ostracized him through middle school. Burdened by guilt and despair as a teenager, Shoya prepares to end his life but decides first to right his past wrongs. He learns Japanese Sign Language, tracks down Shoko at a community center, and returns her old communication notebook to seek reconciliation.

Miyu Irino provided the Japanese voice for teenage Shoya, while Saori Hayami voiced Shoko. The theatrical release generated ¥2.3 billion in Japan and reached $30.8 million in total worldwide box office earnings. At the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize in March 2017, the film received the Excellent Animation of the Year award. The film won Animation of the Year at the 2017 Tokyo Anime Award Festival and won Best Animation Feature Film at the 26th Japan Movie Critics Awards. Anime Limited handled theatrical distribution in the United Kingdom in March 2017.
