Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is an anime television series animated by Madhouse that began airing in September 2023 on Nippon Television. Director Keiichirō Saitō helmed the adaptation based on the fantasy manga written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. Evan Call composed the musical score, and Reiko Nagasawa designed the characters.

Following a ten-year quest, the elven mage Frieren and her party of heroes defeat the Demon King and restore peace across the land. Because elves live for thousands of years, Frieren perceives time differently than mortals and departs to wander independently while studying spells. She returns 50 years later for a meteor shower, finding the hero Himmel elderly, and his subsequent funeral leaves her grieving over her failure to learn about his short human life. Frieren adopts an orphaned girl named Fern as her magic apprentice and begins a journey northward toward heaven to meet Himmel's spirit.

Atsumi Tanezaki voices the elf Frieren, and Kana Ichinose voices her young apprentice Fern. Madhouse produced 28 episodes for the debut season, which aired between September 2023 and March 2024. The premiere aired as a special two-hour broadcast on Nippon Television on September 29, 2023, before shifting to weekly episodes. Scriptwriter Tomohiro Suzuki oversaw series composition for all 28 episodes. Madhouse staff also created an accompanying web mini-anime titled Fun-Sized Frieren on YouTube between October 2023 and March 2024. Studio Madhouse and Toho Animation officially announced a second television season in September 2024.

Crunchyroll licensed the anime for streaming across North America, Europe, and Latin America, launching an English dub in October 2023. Muse Communication distributed the series across Southeast Asia through television and digital platforms. At the 10th Anime Trending Awards in March 2024, the series won Anime of the Year alongside awards for best fantasy and best adapted screenplay. The anime also received the Daruma d'Or for Best Anime at the 2024 Japan Expo Awards held in Villepinte, France. The Japanese record label Sony Music released the opening theme song The Brave by Yoasobi in September 2023.
