Hunter × Hunter

Hunter × Hunter is an anime television series produced by Madhouse that premiered in October 2011 on Nippon Television. The television series adapts the adventure manga written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Hiroshi Kōjina directed the 148 episodes that aired continuously between October 2011 and September 2014. Takahiro Yoshimatsu designed the animated characters, and Yoshihisa Hirano composed the original musical score. Megumi Han starred as the Japanese voice of Gon Freecss, with Mariya Ise voicing his traveling companion Killua Zoldyck. Film distributor Toho distributed two spin-off films in Japanese theaters during 2013, beginning with Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge in January and concluding with Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission in December. The television series serves as a complete reboot of the franchise, unattached to the 1999 television series.

A 12-year-old boy named Gon Freecss resides on isolated Whale Island until learning that his absent father Ging lives as an elite licensed Hunter. Seeking to understand the career that drew his father away, Gon departs home to participate in the perilous annual Hunter Examination. He forms an alliance on the voyage with Kurapika, who seeks retribution for his murdered clan, and Leorio Paradinight, an aspiring doctor needing exam funding. The examinees confront lethal endurance tests, subterranean mazes, and ruthless rivals while Gon bonds with runaway assassin child Killua Zoldyck.

Crunchyroll provided English-subtitled simulcasts across North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia an hour after Japanese television broadcasts. Animax Asia started airing regional broadcasts in April 2012, while Viz Media acquired North American distribution rights in October 2015. Television network Adult Swim broadcast an English-language dub across the United States starting in April 2016. The series took first place for 2011 releases in the Anime Trending Decade Awards poll conducted in 2020. Australian distributor Madman Entertainment made the series available across Australia and New Zealand through its AnimeLab platform.
