Steins;Gate
Steins;Gate is an anime television series animated by White Fox that began airing on TV Aichi in April 2011. Story concept creator Chiyomaru Shikura developed the original 2009 science fiction visual novel game with companies 5pb. and Nitroplus. Hiroshi Hamasaki and Takuya Sato directed the 24 episodes.
In Tokyo's Akihabara district, university student Rintaro Okabe operates the Future Gadget Laboratory with close friends Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hashida. During a science conference, Okabe discovers the body of neuroscience researcher Kurisu Makise inside the Radio Kaikan building. A text message sent to Hashida about the murder triggers an unexpected temporal shift, leaving Makise alive and unaware of the incident. The laboratory members soon realize their phone-operated microwave oven can send text messages into the past, changing recorded history.
Mamoru Miyano voices the central character Okabe, while Asami Imai voices Kurisu. Kyuuta Sakai designed the characters for animation, and Takeshi Abo composed the instrumental music score. The 2011 series concluded after 24 episodes, followed by an additional original video animation episode in 2012. A sequel film, Steins;Gate: The Movie − Load Region of Déjà Vu, reached Japanese cinemas in April 2013 and grossed over 560 million yen. A 23-episode sequel series titled Steins;Gate 0 aired on Japanese television in 2018.
Funimation began streaming the English dub in North America in 2012. The 15th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2011 selected the anime as a Jury Recommended Work in the Animation Division. At the 2011 Newtype Anime Awards, the series took second place for Best Anime Series of the year. The same ceremony awarded director honors to Hamasaki and Sato, while writer Jukki Hanada won the award for Best Screenplay. Voters at the event also named Rintaro Okabe the Best Male Character of 2011.
