Subaru Natsuki, a socially reclusive Japanese teenager, steps out of a convenience store at night and finds himself transported to a fantasy city. Muggers corner him in an alley until a silver-haired half-elf named Emilia and her magical cat companion Puck rescue him from harm. Subaru offers to help Emilia search for a stolen insignia that proves her royal candidacy in the dragon kingdom of Lugnica. An assassin attacks them inside a loot house where Subaru discovers he has a supernatural ability that rewinds time to a previous checkpoint upon his death.

Season two aired in two separate halves between July 2020 and March 2021 with another 25 episodes, followed by season three in October 2024 with 16 episodes.
