Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul is an anime television series animated by Pierrot that began airing on Tokyo MX in July 2014.
The anime adapts the manga written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. Shuhei Morita directed the series, with character designs by Kazuhiro Miwa and music composed by Yutaka Yamada.
Ken Kaneki, a college student in Tokyo, goes on a date with a woman named Rize Kamishiro who secretly belongs to a flesh-eating species known as ghouls. After Rize attacks him in an alley, falling steel construction beams crush her and leave Kaneki severely wounded. Surgeons save his life by transplanting Rize's organs into his body, turning him into a half-human hybrid who cannot digest regular food. Kaneki finds refuge at Anteiku, a quiet neighborhood cafe staffed by peaceful ghouls who teach him how to control his hunger among humans.
Natsuki Hanae and Sora Amamiya lead the Japanese voice cast as Ken Kaneki and Touka Kirishima. The first season contains 12 episodes and ran through September 2014. A second 12-episode season, titled Tokyo Ghoul √A, aired in 2015 with an alternate storyline drafted with input from Ishida. Two prequel original video animation episodes, Tokyo Ghoul: Jack and Tokyo Ghoul: Pinto, arrived in 2015. A sequel anime series titled Tokyo Ghoul:re aired across two 12-episode split halves in 2018 to adapt the sequel manga chapters.
The English version first streamed in North America in 2014 on Funimation. In 2015, the theme song Unravel won the Opening Theme Song of the Year category at the Anime Trending Awards. The franchise expanded to live-action cinema with a theatrical film released in Japan in July 2017. In 2018, the German publication AnimaniA presented its AnimaniA Award for Best OVA to the German release of Tokyo Ghoul: Jack and Pinto. Bandai Namco also published an action video game based on the anime for PlayStation 4 in 2019.
